Fall Events In San Francisco
San Francisco is a delight any time of year. The city's beautiful architecture, amazing culture, and vibrant community make it one of the nation's most desirable places to live nationwide (part of the reason almost any apartment complex in San Francisco is bustling with activity). Fall, however, provides something magical in this city. There are a great many events taking place that are perfectly emblematic of the season, and grant residents the opportunity to immerse themselves in some of the finest offerings in culture, theater, sports, and more. When you're preparing to find things to do this Autumn, be sure to keep some of the following things in mind.
Theater & Culture
San Francisco is home to a thriving scene of both theater and cultural events. One such prominent example is this season's production of Turandot:
"Turandot—a cold-hearted but exquisitely beautiful princess who challenges her suitors to a deadly game of wits. Only Calaf, an exiled prince, is hot-blooded enough to crack her icy veneer."
There are still showings of this bombastic opera running through November and December. If you've got three hours to kill and love the opera, this will be an event for you. As for the performances, reviews seem to be overall positive and complimentary of the actors, music, and elegant design. Opera Wire describes the show as a "real fairy tale" and champions the messages and themes contained in the production:
"In SFO, the finale, bathed in red, brings us finally into a different universe – ice has turned fire – love conquers all, and a bit of clever riddle answering – and even though the lovely Liu died longing, the story of her love helps in Turandot’s transformation. What else should a fairy tale be?"
Of course, the opera isn't for everyone, and some prefer an old-fashioned symphony performance instead. The San Francisco Symphony has a packed calendar throughout the Fall, with many options for lovers of many different composers, artists, and instruments. October 29th, for instance, will feature a riveting performance of chamber music done by some of the smaller ensembles. The very next day, on the other hand, will have a stunning solo performance of the works of Frédéric Chopin, done by young Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov.
If you'd rather just see a musical, though, San Francisco is also home to some of the best renditions of popular shows in the Bay Area. The Tony Award Winning production of Aladdin is coming to the Orpheum Theatre starting November 1st, part of the show's first-ever North American tour. It already received rave reviews after opening back in 2014, and received critical praise when performed overseas. This leg of the its first showings in the US outside of New York shouldn't be missed.
Fun Shows
As a noted hub of technology and innovation, events like the Annual SF Auto Show are par for the course. From November 18-26, at the Moscone Center, gearheads, tech enthusiasts, and everyone else who just really loves cars will get to see some of the newest and most eye-catching models at this expo.
Of the many vehicles on display, though, perhaps one of the most appealing features will be some highlight works from Dominator Street Rods. These lovingly crafted hot-rods are built with horsepower and handling in mind, and are the apple of many a true car nuts eye.
The calendar of events and ride and drive features haven't been nailed down as of yet, but there are sure to be some impressive vehicles in attendance, as near every year of this show (this is the 6oth) has managed to show off some of the best of what the auto industry has to offer.
Far removed from the world of automobiles is The Great Dickens Christmas Fair & Victorian Holiday Party. Starting in November, on the 18th, this weekly event will lead up through December and take visitors on a trip back into Victorian-era London:
"The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is a one-of-a-kind holiday adventure into Victorian London, an elaborate party with hundreds of costumed players performing and interacting with patrons in over 120,000 square feet of theatrically -lit music halls, pubs, dance floors, and Christmas shops."
It will take place at the Cow Palace Exhibition Halls, technically in Daly City, but close enough to San Francisco that getting there is no huge hurdle to surmount. For those patrons that want to get in on the fun to an even greater degree, a Victorian costume of their own is certainly welcome. The event organizers have easy to follow guidelines about what sort of costumes are acceptable, along with plenty of details on what specific items of clothing to wear, fabrics to use, colors that would be fashionable, and resources you can turn to for ideas.
Fall Festivals
There's no shortage of Fall festivals in the Bay Area, and San Francisco has plenty to keep you occupied. For fans of cinema, 3RD I might be just what you're looking for. This International South Asian Film Festival is now in its third year, showcasing the best in filmmaking from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Canada, Australia, and the US, with a focus on promoting diverse images of South Asians.
Or you might instead decide that the Renegade Craft Fair is more your thing. The "best makers of handmade goods from the Bay Area and beyond assemble for this free-to-attend marketplace for indie-craft culture." It's the world's largest such showcase of independent craft and design, believe it or not, and an outgrowth of the founding Renegade fair that took place in Chicago back in 2003. There will be workshops, diligent artisans, and, of course, plenty of crafts on display for you to peruse and purchase at your leisure.
